I’m sick of Barbie

Can you believe the Barbie movie’s marketing budget exceeded the actual production cost? Yes! With ease!  With Greta Gerwig’s genius at the helm and the star-studded cast, the movie should have had the chance speak for itself. But the marketing machine went into overdrive, setting up real-life Barbie dreamhouses, serving pink burgers, and sparking social media meme wars against Oppenheimer. The question is, did all this pizzazz add true value to the movie?

Pink Tatt and Brand Collabs

Now, I’m all for some Barbie charm, but let’s talk about ALL THOSE BRAND COLLABS. Primark, Boohoo, Forever 21, NYX Cosmetics, Tangle Teezer, and Crocs (just to name a few!) – it’s a pink explosion out there! Where’s Climate Crisis Barbie to remind us that we don’t need all this excessive pink tatt in the world? And where’s Women’s Rights Barbie to call out the collaborations with fast fashion brands that continue to exploit women worldwide? Do these collabs not contradict the feminist ideals Barbie should be championing?

Saturated with Barbiecore

Beyond the sustainability concerns, I confess I’m over the Barbiecore mania. The movie had been hyped to the moon, and I walked into the cinema with high hopes. But alas, I didn’t feel the magic. It was fun and a visual treat but I hated the feminist message that was front and centre. It felt a tad too forced. Sometimes, subtlety can make a more powerful impact.

A Call for Reflection

Barbie, my dear, we know you’re a material girl, but let’s take a moment to reflect. Practice what you preach! The glitzy marketing might have garnered attention, but substance and authenticity speak louder. Your influence could be a driving force for positive change in the world. Embrace sustainability, support feminism wholeheartedly, and make choices that align with the values you represent.

In Conclusion

Let’s remember that less can be more. The movie’s brilliance should have shone through without all the flashy marketing and overproduction of products that our climate-crisis world just didn’t need. Barbie, you had a unique opportunity to be a symbol of positive change and empowerment and I’m so disappointed you went down this route instead.
