Should we boycott The Body Shop for Palestine?
Okay so, I’m a big fan of The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. This works to end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law. I love a consumer boycott as a form of activism and have definitely cut out the big three – Disney, McDonalds and Starbucks – in light of recent events. Other notable brands include HP (Hewlett Packard), Puma and Sabra hummus.
Why do some lists suggest boycotting The Body Shop?
Basically, I’ve seen The Body Shop popping up on some BDS boycott lists (not all!) and it’s had me concerned. After a search online the only evidence I found to support boycotting TBS was outdated blog posts listing them as being owned by L’Oreal. However, it’s essential to note that The Body Shop hasn’t been owned by L’Oreal since 2017 when it was acquired by Natura. So there’s no grounds to boycott The Body Shop whilst boycotting L’Oreal.
I was actually at a The Body Shop PR event today (perks of being an influencer is having contacts at these companies!) and I got the chance to corner them and get some clarification.
They confirmed that they do not belong on that boycott list as they are no longer owned by L’Oreal and because they have no stores in Israel. There is however a store called ‘Body Shop’ that operates in Israel which has unfortunately caused some confusion.
A Closer Look at The Body Shop’s Ethics
In conclusion, there is no substantial evidence to support boycotting The Body Shop in solidarity with Palestine. On the contrary, The Body Shop stands out as an ethical brand, recognised as a B-Corp, actively campaigning against animal testing, and leading an impressive Community Trade program.
