Is Child’s Farm Sun Lotion Reef-Safe?
When putting together my guide to Reef Safe + Vegan Sun Cream, I was really keen to see whether or not the Child’s Farm formulas* fit the bill. They’re a little bit cheaper than most eco-lotions, but still really good for sensitive skin. After all, they’re made for children! Don’t let the brand name put you off, anyone can use these formulas – old or young.
Are Child’s Farm Reef-Safe? Their Response…
When asked about whether or not their suncream is reef-safe they had this to say:
Environment and sustainability are really key at Childs Farm and we want to make sure we do what we can to help the environment for us and our little ones. UV filters (the ingredients in sun cream that protect skin from UVA and UVB rays) including octocrylene have had no proven link to damaging coral.

The two main ingredients that have caused concern and media attention over coral reefs and have caused Hawaii and Florida to ban the use of certain UV filters are oxtinoxate and benzophenone-3, which we do not use in our sun cream. The studies and research that this concern was based off do not reflect real life conditions and what actually happens in nature and so cannot conclude a link between the use of sun cream and damaging the coral reefs.
Complications
Frustratingly, right now there is no definition on what makes a product ‘reef-safe’. This is mostly because research into this is still pretty new. A quick google on ‘is octocrylene reef safe?’ frustratingly gives me no straight answer. To me, it sounds like Child’s Farm have taken reasonable action to create an eco-friendly product by avoiding ingredients banned in Hawaii and Florida.
Personally, I would feel comfortable buying their from their sun care range* based on their answers here. But I’m not an expert in reef-safe skincare, so would be keen to hear other thoughts on this.
Are Child’s Farm Vegan and Cruelty Free?
Like all things in life, I like my skincare to be kind to animals. That’s why I’m always quick to check whether or not beauty products are vegan or cruelty free..
✔ Mostly Vegan – The majority of their range is registered with The Vegan Society. The only products not suitable for vegans are the strawberry and mint hair conditioner and hair detangler, which both contain honey. [Correct May 2020, double check here]
✔ Cruelty Free – All of their own brand cosmetic and personal care products are approved under the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny Programme, the internationally recognisable gold standard for cruelty free products.
