Vegan Hair Cut at the Painted Lady

I am one of those girls that leaves WAY too long between haircuts and ends up with a head full of split ends before she books in. This started years back when I’d avoid going to salons because I felt guilty using non-vegan products in them. Zoom forward to 2019 and, YES, vegan-friendly salons are slowly and surely becoming a thing. So there’s no excuse for me to avoid regular cuts and fresh ends.

However, vegan-friendly salons still aren’t dime a dozen – you may have to travel a little further and search a little harder, but you can find them. My latest haircut was at The Painted Lady and I thought it’d be great to share my experience with you guys to give you an idea of what to expect there: from products to atmosphere.

Find them in Shoreditch

The Painted Lady is a Shoreditch based salon where you can get a vegan-friendly gel manicure, pedicure or haircut. If you follow my @veganbeautygirl account, you probably know that this is my favourite salon as I’m always popping in for fresh, pretty nails. They have a cosy, vintage vibe and proudly display their vegan products throughout the salon. 

One of the great advantages of booking in with The Painted Lady is that you’ll find yourself in London’s vegan heart with plenty to eat and do in the local area:

  • Dine at the pastel pink Genesis which serves up a completely plant-based, GMO-free and organic menu
  • Grab some amazing vegan cake (or other sweet treats) and the colourful Vida Bakery
  • Head to The Canvas Cafe, a local vegan cafe that hosts plenty of community events from comedy nights to mindfulness workshops

Vegan Friendly Salon

The Painted Lady (TPL) has always been an eco-conscious salon but only started getting serious regarding their vegan offerings a year or two ago. They had both team members and clients who started requesting vegan-friendly beauty treatments, as they were struggling to find these in London salons. This is where TPL wanted to step in and make a difference.

Whilst their vegan services have proven really popular with both vegan and non-vegan customers, they still have some older products and brands which aren’t vegan. So, although it’s not a completely vegan salon, they do have a thorough understanding of the vegan lifestyle and can provide a fully vegan service upon request.

The Cut & Style

I requested a trim that maintained my length whilst reviving my shape and layers. The wash included a luxurious head massage and used the gorgeously scented R+Co products. It’s quite a small, cosy space and I had my haircut in one of the chairs downstairs.

I absolutely love my cut; it feels so much lighter and shapes my face beautifully. I’m often a bit hesitant regarding haircuts and worry about losing too much length, but it was such a relaxing experience and I left with gorgeous hair. Nothing to worry about!

Mostly I find it’s the little things that I love about going to a vegan-friendly salon. The usual mindless hair cut chit-chat turns into great conversations about animals, the latest vegan foods and the beauty industry. Even better, you’re able to get a tea with non-dairy milk and even a biscuit too.

The Products Used

TPL uses the conscious brand R+Co  and stocks their vegan products.  These smelt incredible and left my hair feeling so revived. All R+Co products are vegetarian or vegan, cruelty free and free from parabens, sulphates, petroleum and mineral oil. Great if you’re also interested in using natural products.

Let them know that you’re vegan before or upon arrival, as there’s just a couple of products they’ll avoid using.

Disclaimer; I received my haircut in exchange for an honest review. I’d already visited The Painted Lady a few times for manicures, so I was really excited to finally try out their hair services.
